I’m an American photographer, and have been living in Sydney, Australia for 5 years.
I shot with a Minolta X-370 and X-700 for about 12 years, and was published a couple of times during that camera era. I’m a purist and an old-schooler, and developed and printed most of my own images as well. I now shoot with a Nikon D90, and I love the ease of digital.
I believe that to be a photographer at the most basic level, you must “have an eye” for it. You must be able to visualize an object, scene or idea, and then try to squeeze that image into that little box called a “camera.”
I tend to gravitate towards eclectic objects and scenes, and so I find myself shooting mostly abstracts and close-ups. That’s not to say that I’ll run away from an amazing sunset or balk at a beautiful mountain scene – they’re just more the exception than the rule in my portfolio. I also find people – especially the older generation – very interesting. However, I’ve not taken many portraits. I’m eager to dedicate more time attempting to capture the character and essence of people – who they are, and where they’ve been.
Photography to me isn’t just about capturing beauty or magic. It’s about capturing life as it is. Whether that’s dirty, beautiful, complicated, simple or slightly altered – it’s the perception of the person behind the camera. That’s what makes the art of photography so real and unique, and that’s why it’s a passion that drives me and leaves me wanting more.
